No I didn’t always love working out…

thursthoughts

I can only imagine how annoying it may be to hear me talk about my love of CrossFit at times. I mean who really loves working out? Sometimes I worry that you will think I am crazy when I say that I actually enjoy working out. I wonder whether it is off-putting to hear that I just have such a love for activity. I mean perhaps I’m just one of those weird people who enjoys sweating and you just aren’t? Right?

Wrong!

Back in the day I hated exercise. In fact to this day I hate running, but don’t let that fool you. I really do enjoy a good sweat session.  Let’s rewind back to high school, maybe middle school, in fact let’s go all the way back to elementary school…

I was quite the social butterfly back then and whatever my friends did, I wanted in. Starting with basketball in third grade. Let me tell you, I was terrible. I don’t ever remember loving the game, in fact I remember being afraid of getting the ball. Then came soccer, which if it was possible, I was even worse at soccer than basketball. I enjoyed defense because I could talk to my friends and didn’t have to run much. Typical girl right?

Basketball

I found dance in middle school and finally I enjoyed something. I wasn’t terrible which was motivation enough to continue but I actually kind of enjoyed it! I kept up with dance classes all through middle school and high school and never quite thought of it as “exercise”. All I knew was I loved it. What I didn’t love: The Treadmill. When I started to worry about my weight in my awkward teenage/preteen years I started to feel a need to “exercise”. I would often walk and maybe even attempt to run on my family treadmill in the basement. I never liked it much but I did it because I thought I had to. Looking back I often wonder if that’s why I didn’t like it, because I thought I needed it.

DanielleDance2
I continued to dance, and love it throughout college, but my interest in fitness and exercise grew as I made the connection that it was actually helping me become a better dancer. I still dreaded my gym workouts though. The elliptical bored me, as did the treadmill, and weight training just felt monotonous. Then I discovered group fitness. I started taking your basic fitness classes like step, body pump, and Zumba. I was shocked to find that I actually looked forward to going to the gym and didn’t feel like I “needed” to just because I had to get a workout in. As my time spent dancing started to fade, I started looking for a new outlet and came across CrossFit. Suddenly I was in love. I was passionate about what I did, I was determined to get better, and was actually looking forward to my workouts. I loved to workout.

Now this article is not written to persuade you to try CrossFit. That’s not my point. My point is that I had to find a type of exercise I loved, that didn’t feel like exercise. I don’t have to workout to stay healthy. I enjoy working out and as a pleasant side effect it keeps me healthy.

Bottom line: do what you love and it won’t feel like work. For me it’s CrossFit. For my mom it’s yoga and running. For my Dad it’s walks outside. Explore as many outlets of activity as you can until you find the one you can’t wait to do again!

What’s your choice of movement you just love??? Get out there and explore what you love.

Best wishes and workouts!

Loooove that post! What a beautiful picture of you as a dancer! Funny, when I started reading the post I thought ‘oh yes, I hate a workout when it’s on the treadmill’ – and there you go not liking this awful thing either. I can’t absolve a workout when I don’t like it. I love Crossfit too, I just started and always looking forward to it!

Great post! I loved hearing about your love and dislike to certain workouts. I’m glad that you’ve found an exercise that you are so passionate about <3

Honestly, I used to find people like you a little annoying. Only because I hated exercise. I used to wonder how someone can be so excited about it. Now I’m just as excited as you are! I don’t know what I would do without fitness. It gives me goals and it keeps me sane. My favorite exercises are combat (basically kickboxing and tai chi) and yoga.

I love it! I was the same way for the longest time. I would always wonder who actually likes this stuff? And then I discovered how accomplished I feel when I reach my goals and complete a workout.

Ahh I totally needed this right now! I’m in a bit of a workout rut because I can’t do the one exercise I love (running) because of some knee issues. So I’ve been doing the elliptical, biking, and weights for the past few months and I really haven’t been enjoying my workouts at all. So thank you for the inspiration to try some new workouts to find something I DO love. I’m going to try out some group fitness classes at my gym next week! :)

So happy you liked this Chelsea. No sense in doing something you’re not enjoying. Get out there and figure out what you love. Maybe yoga, pilates, a barre class, boxing, Zumba….Just throwing some ideas out. Excited to hear if you find something good :)

i can’t wait to try crossfit! i’m REALLY hoping to try it this weekend – i love lifting weights but sometimes it gets so lonely by yourself! i wish i was a better dancer haha but unfortunately my best moves come after a grey goose on the rocks x2 hahah

I think a lot of people feel the same as you about dancing. I just had someone tell me they love Zumba so much because it’s the one time they can dance crazy while sober ;) You will love CrossFit! The weightlifting days at CrossFit are my favorite by far and I love that it is more of a group atmosphere. I always get bored when I workout by myself!

Luckily I have been into exercise for a long time, and I like many different styles. However, I’ve gone through my phases. haha Finding what works for you can take lots of patience.

Totally! I’ve been through so many phases! From making up my own circuits, to step class, to CrossFit!

I was never good at soccer or anything thing involved hand eye coordination. I found swimming at like 5 and never stopped until I was 23, somehow I feel in love with running. But there are days I hate it!

So true sometimes you have those days were you hate what you typically love! Happens to me all the time too!

My favorite form of exercise, by far, is running! Unfortunately I am still rehabing my knee from surgery in June and am not yet able to get out there. So for now, I am sticking with walking. Still fun, just not quite as thrilling and satisfying!

danielle December 13, 2012 at 9:17 pm

Hope you heal quickly! I agree there is nothing quite as satisfying as your favorite workout!

I can totally relate to your basketball and soccer days! I agree with you that it’s important to find something you enjoy. That’s the only way you can stick with it throughout your life. I love running, but I can get burned out with it and like to switch it up with strength training and group exercise classes.

Reply

danielle December 13, 2012 at 9:18 pm

I definitely have to switch things up. That’s why I love that I teach a few group fitness classes. Nice switch up from crossfit once in a while!

I’m happy to hear you found a workout you are so passionate about! I was a competitive swimmer for about 10 years, like swam 10 times a week. Insane, I loved it and had a hard time finding something I loved as much after I quit. Now I’ve embraces spinning and pilates, HIIT, tabata. I love a bunch of different stuff now! I love these posts where you show more of yourself:)

Oh sista, I’m with ya! I never liked working out and to this day, you won’t find me liking running….that’s why I lift heavy and watch my food intake so I don’t need crazy cardio!

xxoo

Reply

danielle December 13, 2012 at 9:19 pm

Love that! That’s my plan exactly. Lifting heavy with no running is my ideal workout!

Alysia @ Slim Sanity December 13, 2012 at 9:26 pm

I think about this concept sometimes about running…. I really like to go on a run at a pace that is easy for me, which isn’t very fast. Then there are days when I hate it, and I realize it’s because I’m pushing myself to go too fast which then forces me to walk because my lungs want to explode. I know at my slower pace I’ll eventually get a little more endurance to get faster over time, so I need to stop pushing myself so hard so I actually enjoy and want to do it!

This is such a great post, Danielle! I couldn’t agree more about the importance of finding a form of movement that you enjoy doing. I tried to force myself to like soooo many different types of exercise, and most of them just felt like a chore (running, I’m looking at you!!). I finally gave up on most workout type of exercises, and now I just really enjoy walking and trying to stay active throughout the day.

Good post! I love running so it doesn’t always feel like a workout. Dont get me wrong sometimes it is tough and I don’t fancy it but most of the time I really enjoy it. There’s no point slogging away for hours at something you hate. You’ll just end up resenting it. It’s got be beneficial to both the mind and body!
